Finding Joy

No matter if you call it finding joy, discovering your bliss, or counting your blessings, joy has an integral part to play in our mental well-being. It encompasses gratitude, provides a sense of enduring contentment, and creates a sense of confidence and appreciation. Joy is something we take for granted when it is something we should be cultivating. Being mindful of the moments of joy in your life and taking the time to be truly present in the moment to recognize them as they are happening takes us out of a reactive mindset and places us in a responsive accepting mindset.
These moments are always available to us, while listening to a powerful piece of music, or the way the stars sparkle on a clear night, when we are surrounded by the ones we love, or enjoying a delicious meal, they are there if we take time to be present with them. How do we find joy in everyday life and become more open to its presence in our lives? We must be attentive and appreciative of the little things to awaken our senses to the joy around us.
This week I challenge you to intentionally bring your awareness to something you do regularly that you enjoy. Is it your first morning cup of coffee? Be present in the scents, smells, and sensations of that cup of coffee. It may be a moment in the evening when you sit with your loved ones after a long day of work. Put down the phone and interact and notice them. Recognize the feelings and sensations being with that person brings to you. Although my husband will cringe at my mentioning this last night as we sat and watched a movie with our grandson, I noticed the fine wrinkles around his eyes that crinkled when he laughed, where there was once none and how his beard is now more salt than pepper. These things brought me joy as much as my own wrinkles and gray hair does knowing that we have spent 26 years together supporting each other through good and bad. I get the honor of watching him grow older with me as I do the same.
My joy was watching the little boy we are honored to call grandson stare enraptured at the lights in the tree while playing with his trucks. Seeing the holidays through the eyes of a child brought me peace and comfort. What joy will you find this week?
Share your bliss in the comments below. I look forward to hearing from you.
